As a piano teacher, I strongly believe in the importance of a firm musical foundation. In lessons, body posture, hand position, and technique are strongly emphasized. I teach my students to become comfortable with reading notes, sight-reading, memorization, and performing. Additionally, theory and ear-training are incorporated in the lesson as well. These aspects are very important as they are the fundamental things needed to produce a well-rounded musician. Thus, in my lesson plans, I cater to each student’s individual strengths and weaknesses in order to provide a well-rounded education. My teaching philosophy holds to the belief that lessons should be tailored to the student’s needs and goals. I work to motivate and instill self discipline in the students. Furthermore, I teach my students to develop their own unique style, attempting to bring out the highest potential and level of musicianship from each student. Thus, I familiarize the students with various classical styles and repertoire as I feel this is an important part of musical education. I work to make piano lessons enriching and enjoyable for every piano student.

Experience: 25 years teaching composition, theory, techniques, songwriting, solos and ear training. David teaches the styles of pop, rock, blues, heavy metal, and alternative. I instruct on solo improvisation, music theory, creating demo tapes, improving live performance and get started with studio recording.
Education: SUNY Purchase, Music Theory, Guitar studies. Studied with local Jazz great John Hill.
Located: Marina Del Ray, CA
David has been playing guitar for over 25 years. First learning rock guitar from an old beat up Strat he found in the trash. A child of the eighties, he quickly got into Eddie Van Halen and Jimmy Page. He was taught Jazz/Fusion guitar by renowned jazz musician, John Hill during his High School Years. David played in numerous bands, never playing covers, but sticking to a set of originals he wrote and performed with his band “Crossfire”. Influenced heavily by the blues styles of Stevie Ray Vaughn and Eric Clapton the styles molded him into a top notch improvisational guitar player. His favorite pass time is freestyle jamming with his life long guitar buddies until the late hours of the night. Also pointing his talents at film and video, David has recently scored his first feature length independent film “The Traveler” in which he wrote and directed, as well as, scored with a 60 track classical landscape of classical music. David’s teaching style is based on infusing his knowledge of music theory into the learning of your favorite songs. First you have fun then you learn why what you are playing sounds so good and works so well. He has found that this approach lends itself to the most comprehensive and interesting lessons as students can jump into music right away and learn without even realizing they are learning. David enjoys teaching beginners all the way up to experts and has had previous student guitar players, such as “David Holvig”, go off to play arenas with the Rebecca St. James Band and others, like “Derek James”, form his own band (The Derek James Band) and tour the US, which he is currently doing.
