Derek can teach students of all ages and levels.
Derek S. is a multi award winning pianist / keyboardist / organist, music director, composer / arranger, film composer, orchestrator, and conductor based out of New York City. Born and raised in Southwest Virginia, Derek comes from an eclectic background of music and art. He has served as the music / vocal director for “The Miss Virginia Pageant” (“Miss America”) since 2011, where he also composes / arranges and performs. He has also coached the state winning representative, as well as arranged her talent competition on “ABC” at “The Miss America Pageant.” He has worked and performed with numerous Emmy, Tony, Grammy, and multi – platinum award winning / nominated artists and shows. He has performed and worked in the nation’s top performing arts venues including New York City’s Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. He has received numerous commissions to compose and arrange different styles of songs and pieces that have been used by various ensembles across the United States. As a scholarship recipient at The Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA (B.M. Film Scoring), Derek performed and collaborated on numerous productions in the Boston area as well as around the country.
Having professional experience both on stage and in the pit, Derek finds himself working in the theatre most often. Recent theatre music direction / performance credits include: “The Pajama Game,” “Into the Woods,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “Hairspray,” “The Rocky Horror Show,” “Legally Blonde,” “Passion,” “Sweeney Todd,” “Shrek: The Musical,” “The Little Mermaid,” “The Wild Party.” (Andrew Lippa), “Sunset Boulevard,” “Rock of Ages,” and Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5.” He is frequently collaborating with other artists in Nashville, Los Angeles, New York City, Boston, and around the world as a songwriter, composer, and musical collaborator.
Derek is a New York chapter member of The Recording Academy. (Grammy) Every day Derek strives to inspire others through music, art, love, and laughter.
