Bassist Ilya O. is a new creative voice in the North American jazz scene. He has developed an original sound as a player, composer, and arranger. He continues to push the boundaries of jazz while simultaneously upholding its tradition and vernacular.

Ilya is currently studying towards a Masters of Music degree in Jazz Studies at The Juilliard School. He studies double bass with Ben Wolfe, and composition and arranging with Andy Farber. Before coming to Juilliard, Ilya graduated from the University of Manitoba’s Desautels Faculty of Music in 2021 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Jazz Performance. During that time he primarily studied with professors Karl Kohut, Jon Gordon, and Meredith Johnson (Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra).

Ilya made his creative debut as leader in 2019 with his small ensemble. Since then he has performed original compositions and arrangements for trio, quintet, octet, and jazz orchestra. Since moving to New York City in 2021 he has performed at some of the city’s top venues including Peter Jay Sharp Theater and Dizzy’s Club. Ilya has been recognized by his peers and mentors alike, culminating in his work being featured on WBGO radio to promote Juilliard Jazz in 2022. That same year he was invited by The Kennedy Center to participate in the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program for outstanding jazz artist-composers.
