Education

  • Master of Music degree from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music studying with Jean-Michel Fonteneau.
  • Bachelor of Music with honors degree from the University of Auckland, New Zealand studying with Edith Salzmann and Eliah Sakakushev von-Bismarck

Experience

Paul has been teaching privately for over 13+ years. He has worked with a variety of

ages and has taught at all levels from beginner to very advanced students. His

experience has taken him all over the world and he has taught at numerous musical institutions.

Bio

Paul L. is an active performer and a music education advocate to the younger

generation of musicians. His career has taken him to perform in the USA, United

Kingdom, Italy and New Zealand where he has performed on famous stages such as

Carnegie Hall, Cadogan Hall, St John Smith Square, Snape Maltings, Queen Elizabeth

Hall, Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls in Rome and Oxford University.

Paul’s orchestral experience includes being Principal cellist with Southbank Sinfonia

(now called Sinfonia Smith Square) under the baton of Gabor Takacs-Nagy, Gabriella

Teychenne, Chloe van Soeterstede, Owain Park and Adam Hickox. During this time, he

has also worked with the Royal Opera House, Academy of St Martin in the Fields,

Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment as well as collaborating with members from the

Allegri Quartet, London Mozart Players, Berkeley Ensemble and grammy-nominated

group Voces8. He was also an associate member of Civic Orchestra of Chicago and

formerly Associate Principal Cello with the Christchurch Symphony from 2021. He was

Principal Cellist of the San Francisco Conservatory Orchestra, London City

Philharmonic, Brixton Chamber Orchestra, Bushey Symphony Orchestra, Wallace

Chamber Orchestra and Auckland Chamber Ensemble. He has also had opportunities

to perform as Associate Principal with British Sinfonietta, New Zealand Sinfonietta and

Brooklyn Chamber Orchestra, Berkeley Symphony as guest Associate Principal, San

Francisco Ballet Orchestra, Seocho Philharmonia and Auckland Philharmonia

Orchestra. He has performed under the baton of Edwin Outwater, Martin West,

Benjamin Northey, Zoe Zeniodi, Brad Cohen and has recorded for labels such as BMG,

Navona, RNZ and Classical KDFC.As an eager chamber musician, Paul has collaborated with many

internationally-recognized artists such as Jonathan Morton, Clio Gould, Elisabeth

Kufferath, Peter Hoerr, Ramon Jaffe and Alvin Wong. He was an invited guest to

perform alongside the cello members of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra as part of

their sanctuary concerts and also a member of the Auckland Cellists. He has toured

under Chamber Music New Zealand performing Max Richter’s Vivaldi Four Seasons as

well as being a founding member of Nikau Harp Trio, who were selected to Arts On Tour

in 2023 and Arvida String Quartet as performers for the prestigious Christopher Classics

concert series in 2023.

He has also performed at music festivals such as Anghiari Festival in Italy, London

Festival of Baroque Music, International Akaroa Music Festival and the International

Society of Contemporary Music and Asian Composer’s League where he performed

compositions as a string trio that were awarded 1st and 2nd prize.
