Bio
Roger L. is a guitarist/composer based in Brooklyn, New York. Shortly
after arriving on the NY scene in 2019, he released his debut
album “Whisper of the Isolated Ones”, featuring Phil Grenadier on
trumpet, Ryosuke Tsutsui on piano, Soso Gelovani on bass, and Nick
Groat on drums. The release was soon recognized by his homeland
Taiwan and was nominated for The Best Jazz Album and The Best Jazz
Composition for the 12th Golden Indie Music Award, the highest award
for jazz category in the country.
Born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan, Roger began his musical journey at the
age of 5 when he started playing piano. Being heavily drawn to harmonic
instruments, he got deeply interested in the guitar at 14, where he could
explore and express harmonies he learned on the piano with different
textures. 10 years later, his co-led jazz band won 2nd prize of the New
Talent Competition affiliated to Taichung Jazz Festival in 2014, the
largest jazz festival held annually in Taiwan. In 2019, Roger finished his
music education with a scholarship from Berklee College of Music in
Boston, where studied with jazz giants such as Mick Goodrick, George
Garzone, Ian Froman and many others.
Roger has been actively performing and recording as a leader and
sideman in U.S and Asia. He has toured in the U.S, Japan, and Taiwan
with different groups. His projects can be seen mostly in Brooklyn and
Harlem’s local clubs.
