Bio

Tanguy S. is a drummer, composer and educator based in New York City. A native of Belgium, Tanguy began playing music at eight years old. By the time he was sixteen, he emerged on the international scene performing with ensembles ranging from orchestral music to contemporary styles. He played in countries across Europe such as the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Holland. During this time, Tanguy began actively competing in snare drum competitions and was the recipient of several awards, including the first place prize for two consecutive years at the Association of Music in International Schools Snare Competition.After completing high school, Tanguy lived in Havana for a year to study Cuban music. He immersed himself within the local scene, studying privately, and performing with world-class Cuban artists such as Emilio Del Monte and Dayramir Gonzales in venues such as the ‘Zorra y el Cuervo’ jazz club. He is also the recipient of a diploma from Havana’s “Instituto Superior de Arte.”In 2009, Tanguy moved to Boston to pursue and complete his bachelor’s degree at the famed Berklee College of Music. While at Berklee, he was privileged to study with jazz masters such as Terri-Lynne Carrington, Ralph Peterson Jr, and Neal Smith to name a few. From these experiences, Tanguy decided to move to New York City in order to grow as a performer within the jazz community. Tanguy obtained his masters degree in Jazz Performance from Queens College, where he was presented the “Discimus ut Serviamus” award. Tanguy was also privileged to record with award winning saxophonist Antonio Hart during this time.Tanguy maintains a consistent teaching, recording, and performing schedule in New York City. He has performed at notable venues and festivals including Lincoln Center, Bar Next Door, Teraza 7, Rue B, Rockwood Music Hall, Mercury Lounge, Ornithology Jazz Club, Silvana, LeFrak Music Hall, Zinc Bar, Arlene’s Grocery, The Penrose, Falmouth Jazz Festival, Louis Armstrong Wonderful World Festival among many others. He has shared the stage with noteworthy musicians such as: Ed Howard, Tia Fuller, Steve Kortyka, Frank Basile, Joseph Lepore, Chad Lefkowitz-Brown, Brandon Lee, Dayramir Gonzales, Antonio Hart, Nick Biello, Sam Blakelock, Chris Bittner, and many others. When he is not creating music with like-minded, forward thinking musicians, Tanguy enjoys sharing his passion for music through education.
