Bravo! You clicked on the picture of the trumpet. Great Choice. You’ve already taken your first step in becoming the world’s greatest trumpeter. The trumpet is a fun instrument to learn and can be used to perform many different types of music including classical, rock and Jazz. So while you are waiting to start your first lesson, here are some interesting facts about your new instrument.
The trumpet belongs to the “brass family” and dates back to the 1500bc. It was originally used as a signaling device. Instruments in this family are played by blowing air into the instrument and buzzing your lips to produce a sound.
There are several types of trumpets. The most common one is called the b flat trumpet. It has 3 valves used to create the pitches that are played. Although the trumpet only has 3 valves it can actually play 45 distinct notes. The player’s embouchure or adjustment of mouth, helps in conjunction with the valves to play the different notes.
Some of the most well known trumpeters include: Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Wynton Marsalis and Phillip Smith.
