Beginning with his grandfather’s late-1950s electric chord organ at the age of 3, Ian has always chosen to spend the majority of his free time sitting at a keyboard, picking away at a guitar, or playing woodwinds in bands and orchestras. At age 8, Ian began studying saxophone and, by age 10, he had added clarinet to his repertoire. Ian began teaching woodwinds and percussion to students ages 8 to 14 at a summer music program in his hometown in Nassau County, and continued to work with many of his clarinet and saxophone students during the school year. In 1996, following a successful audition at the Nassau County NYSSMA Festival, Ian was selected to play alto saxophone in the New York All-State band during the annual NYSSMA Winter Conference in Rochester NY. While an undergraduate at Binghamton University, working toward a B.A. in mathematics and a B.Mus. with a focus on music theory and performance, Ian continued to study both saxophone and clarinet while performing with the University Symphony Orchestra, the University Wind Ensemble, the Harpur Jazz Ensemble and the University Saxophone Quartet, as well as preparing for his own solo recitals with piano accompaniment. Upon graduating, Ian returned home to Nassau County to resume and grow his private studio over the next 10 years while performing as a woodwind doubler with regional musical theatre companies. With more than 30 years of playing experience, Ian now lives in New City NY with his wife and 2 daughters and is thrilled to be working with Rockland County’s clarinet and saxophone players.
